SEO, AdWords, Social Media Oh My!

When products and services are marketed via the World Wide Web, it is called “Internet marketing.” Internet marketing has opened doors like no other marketing before it. An entrepreneur has the power to capture a significantly large and diverse audience with the click of a mouse. Not only that but Internet marketing is growing in popularity because entrepreneurs now have the ability to interact and target consumers with increased sophistication. Internet marketing goes by several terms including eMarketing, Web marketing, online marketing, and iMarketing. All of these names refer to the same form of marketing.

Web marketing is an excellent resource that far surpasses traditional marketing efforts. Like all things, there are pros and cons to Internet marketing. A major disadvantage is the learning curve associated with Internet marketing. For those entrepreneurs who are not Internet savvy, it can take time to acclimate to this new form of advertising. On the flip side, Internet marketing can be inexpensive while still reaching a large audience. In addition, marketers can interact with consumers via the Web, a trait no other medium offers.

No matter who you are or what you are selling, it is important to have some form of Internet marketing program in play. This can be as simple as a Web site or as complicated as a full-blown online marketing campaign that includes banner ads, search engine optimization (SEO), e-mail campaigns, and social media marketing. Regardless, the Internet has the ability to reach consumers that might otherwise be unattainable. By not marketing to the online world, potential sales are lost.

As mentioned above, there are many different ways to marketing online. On of the more common methods is search engine optimization. SEO appears complicated at first, but it is actually very simple. When a consumer searches the Internet, he or she utilizes a search engine to search for Web sites of interest. The search is performed via a site such as Google in which the consumer enters one or more keywords. The search engine generates a list of Web sites the consumer might be interested in based on these keywords. When a marketer makes an effort to utilize the keywords used by a target audience, they improve the Web sites search engine ranking and thus traffic.

Speaking of Google, another type of Internet marketing is Google adwords. An advertising product hosted by the search engine giant, Google adwords boasts a huge success for the company, pulling in $21 billion in 2008. There are several components to adwords. The simple component is pay-per-click (PPC). PPC allows the entrepreneur to select a series of words that when clicked on produce an advertisement. These ads are paid for based on the amount of clicks they receive. Text and banner ads are another type of Google adwords. These ads are placed in Google’s network based on information provided by the advertiser.

Last but not least, social media marketing is another primary type of online marketing. This type of marketing is exceptionally interesting because it functions much like word of mouth, but on a virtual level. Consumers and advertisers interact via social media sites such as LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. Social media marketing has two features. One, it allows consumers to brag about their favorite products and brands and share their experiences with their friends. Second, consumers can share their favorite links to products and services via links services including Del.icio.us, Reddit, and Digg.

In all, Internet marketing is the new and improved form of marketing that boasts too many advantages to list in this article. In the past several years, marketers have watched as traditional marketing tactics have been replaced with online marketing. Internet marketing is not only affordable, but necessary. Without it, advertisers are missing out on potential buyers – a concept many of us cannot afford to do. There are several ways to market online. At the very least, you should have a Web site to establish an online presence.
