Web Hosting explained.
Web hosting allows you to save files to a server while the administrators provide maintenance. One big benefit of using web hosting is having access to a faster internet connection.
The idea behind web hosting is to save money for the most people by using a fast internet connection. Hosting for one single person would be very expensive, therefore when you have many people share the costs it becomes affordable and convenient for all users.
A example of free hosting is Geocities, though the features you can choose from are very basic.
Some hosting companies describe their services as virtual hosting. Virtual hosting usually implies that their services will be transparent and that each site will have its own domain and email addresses. In most cases, web hosting and virtual hosting are synonyms. Some web hosting companies allow their users to have their own virtual server, with the appearance that the user is controlling a server dedicated to him or herself.
The dedicated hosting is for the exclusive use of an entire server for one client, whereas shared hosting means that several customers share one server. Only the high-traffic web sites require dedicated hosting. Many companies buy their own servers and place them on a site that provides quick access to the Internet. This practice is called Housing.
Some web hosting sites offer a wide range of services. The most basic is file hosting which can accommodate the pages of websites and other files via FTP or a web interface. The files are displayed on the Web as they are and with little processing. Many Internet providers offer this service for free to their customers. Hosting is typically free, advertiser-sponsored, or cheap.
Normally web hosting is adequate only for personal web pages. A website needs a complex package which provides more advanced support for database and application development platforms (eg PHP, Java, and ASP. NET). These allow customers to write or install scripts for applications like forums and forms.
The hosting provider can also provide a web interface (e.g. control panel) to manage the Web server and installing scripts as well as other services like e-mail.
There following are some types of Hosting: Free Hosting. Image Hosting to use with images of different formats, Shared Hosting which is the way many users around the world access servers, and Dedicated Hosting which is typically the most expensive and exclusive one.
